My favorite gun. If I was to buy another gun I would probably buy this. The below is in regards to changing the type of round it is. You could in fact have 3 guns in 1.

Barrels, Bolts and Magazine Kit to Change Calibers


Switching a Desert Eagle to another chambering requires only that the correct barrel, bolt assembly, and magazine be installed. Thus, a conversion to fire the other cartridges can be quickly accomplished. The most popular barrel length is 6 in (152 mm), although 8, 10 and 14 in (202, 254 and 356 mm) barrels are available.

The Mark XIX barrels are machined with integral scope mounting bases, making adding a pistol scope a simple operation. The rim diameter of the .50 AE is the same as the .44 Remington Magnum cartridge for which the pistol was originally chambered, consequently only a barrel and magazine change is required to convert a .44 Desert Eagle to the larger, more powerful .50 AE.[2][4]

The Desert Eagle is fed with a detachable magazine. Magazine capacity is 9 rounds in .357 Magnum, 8 rounds in .44 Magnum, and 7 rounds in .50 AE.

Counterpoint:

It's a hyped gun, thanks to Hollywood. Not that that in itself is a con, see below. With the .50 AE cartridge, it is possible to reach out and say hi to targets 200 meters away, which is nifty. The gas-operated system of operation means that it can handle immensely powerful cartridges that only revolvers have historically been able to handle, and have a few more shots on hand to fire, and the caliber switch system is a nifty feature. I've heard of it being used for taking out big game. I had a CO2 pellet DE, and that thing was huge. I needed to hold it with both hands to get a nice solid grip on it, but no real need to, it had no recoil, being a mere pellet gun. Sure looked cool, though.

It has some cons working against it. One, it's large in size. If it's possibly to have Too Much Gun, the Desert Eagle qualifies. You'll need big hands or a solid two-handed grip to use it. Two, it's heavy. Might help keep recoil down, but from what I've read, these things kick like a mule. I wouldn't want my wife firing one. Imagine trying to carry that around all day - unless you're an Agent, you'll probably hate it. Third, feeding it ammunition is difficult, due to cost per bullet. Fourth, as it is gas-operated (odd for a pistol) you will have to be very meticulous about cleaning it. I see a DE as a He-Man gun. Not very practical at ALL, is the user is compensating for something? Makes a He-Man muzzle blast (goodbye to night-time vision if you fire it at night) and they're LOUD. Not just for the shooter, but for other people nearby. Finally, it's expensive to buy. For the cost to purchase one of these...

You could buy and trick out a Glock. I'd like a 17 (4.5 inch barrel) or a 19 (4 inch barrel). Proven guns, no external safety switch to forget about - yet they're still safe, excellent magazine capacity, nice aftermarket exists for them. If you want smaller, go for a 26 - and as it's a 9mm, the small size isn't a big problem for controllability. Bigger-caliber guns require beefy frames and solid grips to keep them controlled. If you're going for a pistol, hard to go wrong with a Glock. I'd let my wife use it, it won't break her wrist.

If you want a He-Man pistol, a revolver is proabably the way to go. Cheaper, less maintenance to worry about, and if it misfires, just pull the trigger again - no slide to re-rack, no safety to fumble with. With the advent of speed-loaders, you can reload a revolver in mere seconds, if it's of the design where the cylinder swings out.
