My First AR-15

Post by Ambush on Wed Feb 27, 2013 10:42 pm

I just picked up a DPMS Panther Arms AR-15. Got it at a decent price. Only thing I've done to it so far is add a piece that raises any rail mounted optics. Also, the optic I have is not magnified, but gives you a reticle choice between red or green and other shapes. It's good for now. The weapon shoots pretty accurate. I would still like to visit the range more. I have no rear iron sights interestingly enough. Need to pick up some.

Future MODs would be fore grip, hangrip, buttstock all in Flat Dark Earth color. Need to stock up on mags. I have the steel one it came with, but only 2 PMAGs made by Troy. I'm still on the look out. I hope to acquire 10 x 30 round steel magazines. I wouldn't want more than that, and that's a lot. I would get the Flat Dark Earth Magazines w/See thru window, but only like 3 of those just to take to the range and for the look. The optic I want would be some type of ACOG. It's an expensive hobby once you start doing this so I'm only really looking to fork over the cash for magazines. All other stuff I'll wait until the Furlough is over.

Pretty. Looking at that brings back some memories of qualifying with the M16A2 - never got a chance to use an M4.

Seriously considering a Mosin-Nagant: You can score a decent 91/30 for about 150-200 bucks along with the sling, tools, bayonet and accessories, and after spending hours cleaning all the Cosmoline out of the thing, you have a range-ready Soviet bolt-action.

Ammunition is cheap, too - you can buy a crate of 880 rounds of 7.62x54 rimmed ammuntion for about 160 bucks. And since it's not a caliber used by the US gov't in any capacity, there's plenty of it around.

Total cost to get the rifle, piles of ammunition and fees can't be much over 450 bucks.

...Although if I had the money to spend, I'd probably go for a nice .223 bolt-action.

Hmm. I've never been interested in those types of rifles. I have seen some rifles like that, or some non-popular ones with maybe woodstocks never really gave much thought. That is, until I saw this cool YouTube channel with these gun owners outlining the benefits of these other types of rifles, making them seem so cool, haha. Like building a custom rifle on the cheap.

I heard you can change the bolt and barrel out of an M4 to accept 7.62. The rifle would then be an AR-10 at the point, I suppose? AR-10's are 7.62. Anywho, it would be nice to have a long range rifle that uses another ammo type such as 7.62.

Er, not really an AR-10 - those are the OLD 7.62 ones. More like the SR-25.

AR-10's didn't have the "T" charging handle and originally, were designed to use a composite barrel (that totally blew up during trials). If the barrel hadn't blown, it would've been a serious contender to replace the M-14.

But yeah, old wooden bolt-actions can be totally remade into modern sharpshooters with all sorts of fancy custon stuff.
