Re: Not Funny Pics
I'll give two clues.
1) Some of you weren't born yet when it was built. My wife was less than a year old, I was seven.
2) The country in which this was built no longer exists.
Does that ring any bells? I'll hold out a few more days before I post up why I posted it in the first place.

Re: Not Funny Pics
Okay, another clue.
I'm not sure how old all of you are, but I'm a product of the 1980's, and among the youngest of the X Generation. The X-to-Y Generations overlapped for a bit, I could fall either way, but I think I identify with the X'ers more in world outlook. My wife is firmly a Y-Generation child, a product of the nineties, and it shows when I get all nostalgic about the Glorious 1980's. She'd rather wax nostalgic about the 90's, which were a confused coming-to-age blur for me. Plus, the music sucked in the 90's.
As such, I still vividly recall the ending of the Cold War, and how utterly messed up the world got right after that. The older guys in Church know that even better than I do, especially those in that midlife bracket Pastor's been preaching to. I remember Chernobyl. I remember the Wall coming down. I remember the collapse of the USSR, and following the first Gulf Live Fire Exercise in great detail as it unfolded on CNN, and we blew up a bunch of Saddam's toys in the sand. I was in the throes of becoming a teenager at the time, and that 1080's early 1990's period burned itself onto my brain. Probably why I think any car 1990 or newer is still "new", that's where my mental clock stopped...!
But that's not why I posted the picture.
Any guesses where this picture is? (besides being a bunch of ones and zeros on an image server...lol)

Re: Not Funny Pics
Dude, I didn't come into this world until 1988 so I really have nothing on the 80's... but yes I can recall a childhood in the 90's very well for you

Heh, another thread hijacked. Does it still count if I hijack my own thread...?

Re: Not Funny Pics
Okay, here's why I posted the picture. It's in Sarajaevo. Yugoslavia hosted the Winter Olympics in 1984, and I remember watching it as a seven-year-old on tv. Cold War still in effect; boycots of summer games had happened twice. We boycot one game, the communist bloc boycots another. Winter games I guess didn't have such a big impact, so we all came. Taiwan actually showed up, and was represented as such. China sort of had heartburn over that.
Fast forward six years. Without the Brotherhood and Unity message being pushed by their charismatic leader Tito (he died 1980), Yugoslavia explodes in ethnic and racial tensions and ceased to exist. Now we have a handful of smaller, poorer countries where Yugoslavia once stood. that picture is onf the Olympic symbol, a symbol of world peace and unity, now all shot up and abandoned. The Olympic Stadium in Sarajaevo ended up being ransacked for the wood contained in the bleachers to make coffins, so war casualties could get some sort of burial. Many didn't even get a coffin.
So I saw that, and recalling hearing horror stories of fellow soldiers in my unit talking about how screwed up that place was when they had served a tour over in Bosnia, and.. well.
Seems that there was some dust that got caught in my eye, or something.
Wow, old post. I finally realized that I can't spelll worth a darn.
