Small Linux installs
brb, going to experiment with Puppy Linux (150 megs) on one of the old machines.
I was going to try D*** Small Linux (50 megs!) but the download links appear to be borked.

Re: Small Linux installs
Got Ubuntu 12.10 on my wife's old laptop. No sound, though (common Ubuntu Laptop issue, I guess).
Since I can't get into the BIOS for the old 4100 to change boot order, I'm stuck using what it came with, unless I image an old drive while it's out of the machine and then install it. Problem with that is, it uses older IDE hard drives, versus much-nicer SATA drives.
I do happen to have a 40gb IDE drive in good condition, though. I guess that's one benefit to being a packrat - more hardware to pick through.

Re: Small Linux installs
UPDATE: I went with Mint 14, so now I have sound, but Mint doesn't recognize the integral wireless card. Fortunately, I have a wireless nub. Seems slower than Ubuntu 12.10, for some reason, and that's overall, not just wireless.
