EVE Online Empty EVE Online

Well here is a very unique MMO that doesn't seem to have all the crap that a majority of MMOs have nowadays.

So far, I'm the only avid player and Roman is getting into it but I think it would be great to have more guys come out and join the fleet!

What is it? Well nothing a little research on Google can't tell you but to sum it up it's a spaceship MMO where you fly around with your buddys doing whatever you can think of doing with a spaceship in space. You can mine, trade & manufacture goods (full blown economy system), explore systems, fight space pirates, fight other players, etc. It's pretty sweet.

It relies heavy on the PVP aspect and the economy is purely player driven. There are NO computer generated item shops, all the goods are made by players for players. Cool huh?

Here are some links for it:

So just a thought if your interested in playing with us let me know.

Whoa.

Read up some on the TV Tropes website. Just, wow.

I liked the bit about Goonswarm getting wthpwned by forgetting to pay their bills - sounded like they were just a bunch of pirates - which is perfectly legal within the game mechanics, so it seems.

Yeah, they were one of the biggest alliances EVE has seen.

And yes, PVP is big so pirating is big as well. I'm telling you, whole alliances of corporations are out there and control certain portions of EVE space. There are even players who just want to roam around and harass you. It's crazy. If you would like a 21 day trial, just let me know and I can refer you, otherwise a trial on your own is just 14 days.

Roman's playing now!!! ^_^

Oops. I went and got the 14-day trial. Graphics rock.

EDIT: Oops, hit send.

Character name is Ibbis Mal. Yeah, Roman might recongnize it as the name of my smuggler from SWG. Smugglers rock, dpesipte having perhaps the lowest hitpoints in the game. They can DPS like no one's business, well, until they get killed. Part of the reason why my wife played a medic, to keep me alive.

Hmmm, smuggling. Sounds like a job I'd like to learn more about.

What I Don't Like: The fact that the resolution defaulted to my laptop native resolution. Made all the text super-duper tiny. Even with my contacts on, I had to get my nose in my laptop's grille to see stuff. I'll have to downgrade the resolution so the text is bigger. That or get some reading glasses. Or a huge monitor - might as well have a docking port for my laptop at this point... The controls will take some getting used to, like having to navigate through lots of right-click menus.

Did the entry tutorial missions. Seems like it's not twitch-based. Twitch-based, as in, you have to have super-human reflexes to target and hit stuff. Part of the reason why I suck on FPS'ers. I'm sure being able to rapidly jam out commands is important for PVP stuff. I like the fact that the basic starter Ibis ship lets you mine. I goofed off and mined some asteroids to kill time, and earn some cash. I also like that the game tells you where your stuff is stored. Might make it suck if you store something several systems away and have to go get it, though.

Travelling is awesome. None of that instant galaxy-spaning travel stuff that SWG does. Sit back and enjoy the beauty of autopilot. Probably grab a cup of coffee for long trips, I guess. My shi is tiny in the docking bay stations! Judging from all the extra space, ships can get REAL BIG. And probably real expensive.

Now some questions:

Do larger ships have operating costs asscociated with them? Like, fuel, reaction mass, supplies, coffee, food, repair costs when docking, that sort of thing?

Since FTL between systems is through jump gates, does it behoove crafty coprorations and alliances to guard jump gates? GalCiv4 had jump points, and it was much easier to guard a distant jump point so you get early warning about incoming activity than having fifty ships jump into your backyard. Of course, that was a turn-based game, so you coud exploit movement rates and stuff.

I sold a few thousand units of Titanium (or was it Tritanium? I got MoO2 on the brain) for some cash after I refined it, but I noted that I could stick it on the market for bidding. Maybe on our next LAN party, Roman and me can get some pointers on some of the economic aspects, as tha's all player run.

Cued up about two days worth of skills training. Probably won't have time tonight to get on there, but at least my character will be doing something so when I do log in Thursday, he'll have learned a few things. I noticed that taking shield management boosted the shield rating a small bit. Sweet. I'll take what I can get. Is there a list of must-have skills, sort of like a skill-tree that most people use, or do skill-builds depend on wht sort of role you'll be doing? Can't imagine gunnery being all that important to a crafter, and vice-versa. Is there a way to redo skills?

And what do stats do for you? I heard a rumor that they're going to include the ability to walk around in stations in order to interact with things. I suppose that means you'll have to watch out for muggers trying to kill you while in port. At lesat that means that your avatar will actually MATTER...

Awesome man, welcome to EVE!

To answer your questions:

There are no general maintenance costs of ships other than to repair them if there damaged once docked. No fuel costs, supplies etc.

Yes, it is common for corps to guard gates (called gatecamping) and blast anyone who comes through but you should only see this in low sec (0.4 to 0.1 security space) or null sec otherwise known as the infamous 0.0. Pirates are known the set up gate camps as well. Here is a more detailed explanation: http://www.eve-wiki.net/index.php?title=Gatecamping

I'm glad you saw the benefits of mining. Trit may be the most common mineral but it is still widely used by manufacturers (basically crafters) which as you can assume go hand in hand. We could use a few good miners for our corp

And a good place to start for skills is the skills roadmap provided by EVE University: http://www.kylania.com/eve/skills.php

I don't think you can redo skills... but it all helps out in the end.

There are not only rumors about starport interaction but this: http://www.dust514-fan.co.uk/

Yeah, they're going to incorporate a whole other FPS shooter game to interact with EVE players.

Also I took note on you mentioned your flying an Ibis as your rookie frig so you are Caldari. With Caldari think boosting your shields for shield tanking as well as missile launchers and rail guns for weapons.

My game name is TA1NTED50UL (the 0 is a zero) I look forward to flying with you.

"tainted soul". I see lots of leet-glish as names. Not used to that, most SWG players either hit the radomize button or ginned up something.

The name goes WAY back to when a few of us high-schoolers were going to sit down and play the tabletop Star Wars RPG. We ended up not doing it, but I had an idea for what kind of character I wanted to do, and Ibbis Mal was the name I picked.

That was way back in 1992. :affraid:

Thanks for the info, I'll have to peruse the wiki when I get home or something, ended up being rather busy with stuff last night, and ended up forgetting to cue up skills. Just as well, I've yet to read a good skill tree, so no biggie.

Yes, well I'm no longer too proud of the name but have too many skills already invested in the character to make a new one.

If your gonna make it to the LAN party tonight we'll have to throw down some EVE.

Some people don't like my name b/c it's in all caps and they think I'm yelling at them in chat but hey, I get their attention :face:

Lol. Whatever manages to work, I guess.

I'll be there, although I'm not sure what I'm in the mood to blow up today. I worked on my car some, cleaning some of the clutter out and drove it briefly, and I'm itching to get it all legal again so I don't have to sweat freeway on-ramp merging anymore - it's nice to have 400-ft/lbs of torque on demand.

Merging is a nail-biting experience with the beater, it barely has enough power to get out of its own way.

EVE Online Empty Re: EVE Online

Post by pvtnum11 Mon Jan 09, 2012 5:50 pm

Wow, has it really been almost two years since I tried this last?

Okay, time for an update, then.

Wife got it in her head that she wanted to try this out with me. Okay, no problem, I warn her that it's pretty much player-driven and that there's a number of players that can be huge griefers.

She says no problem, let's do this.

Pop in, I grind out the five entry tutorial mission-chains in about a day, not terribly diffficult to do. Wife really likes mining and production, so she decides that we'll do that - mine asteroids, build up a bank of processed ores, and crank out stuff that sells well on the local market. Ammo, upgrades, drones, probes, typical disposable stuff. She hits a snag - makign a certain ammo type calls for a kind of rare material, that usually is only found in low-security space.

No problem, she finds a system only five jumps away from warm-n-fuzzy noob-system that we can get to real quick for a look around.

Bingo, this system has what we need! Let's do this and scram; I'm worried that the NPC's that spawn may be more than we can handle.

I need not worry about NPC's.

It's the PLAYERS.

Guy shows up, has a real big ship. I panic and try to get a lock on him, whle wife freaks out and tries to re-grab the ore she just jattisoned over the side (I was going to grab it as I have the larger cargo bay), but he opens fire. I get my ship toasted, he then shifts fire to her. His attention off of me, I take my pod and make haste. He warp-jams her pod, pod-kills her.

I find out that he had hailed us using local-chat asking for five million credits. I didn't see it, as I usually have the chat window minimized. I then see his name, and clickign that takes me to his bio page. Wow, he has a bounty on his head for 100 MILLION credits. Not only that, but he's part of a band of thugs, and that hsi security rating is deep into the negatives, something you only get by.... killing other civilian players, amon other things.

Yeah, I'm thinking that if we were chumps and gave him the creds, he wouldve killed us anyway.

Lesson learned: Avoid low-security space. Other lesson learned: have insurance on your stuff. I did, wife didn't. I ended up ahead, actually, even though I had to re-buy everything to outfit my replacement ship.

We ended up finding better asteroids to mine in a safe spot later that evening anyway. Sure, longer trip, but no pesky players loking to pick on noobs. Now we can make what we need, we learned a nice lesson that EVE is just a little bit cut-throat, and we didn't get all butt-hurt over it.

She still wants to purchase an account for herself, just so she can unlock all the other cool stuff that you can't do on trial acounts. Wants me to, also, then we can work in tandem on stuff.

EVE Online Empty Re: EVE Online

Post by pvtnum11 Wed Jan 11, 2012 5:48 pm

Update, the sequel:

I'm amazed at how much in-game information you can glean from sitting around doing nothing in your boat (or in a station). So there I was, jumped into some start-system (Arnon, I think), chillaxing while I read over my mission objectives. A player ship is chilling by the station, so I right-click on it and find out who's piloting it. From there, I could find out which corporation he belongs to, how long he's been with them, and more importantly, if he is either an outlaw or merely wanted. Of course, he has a bounty on his head for a nice tidy sum of ISk, but there's no way I'll be claiming that - his ship is a battlecruiser, and I'm only flying a piddly little destroyer (great against frigates, suck-all against everythign else).

Anyhoo, I find an Agent (NPC quest-giver) and do some missions for some cash. Time bonus payments if you do the mission in a certain timeframe, which is nice. Some jobs give hardware, too, and most improve your factional standing.

There's some big scrapping going on to the Galactic North, Goonswarm Federation (biggest player alliance since forever) and White Noise are going to blows over some juicy bit of galactic space, and WN is losing system after system (Sovreignity, usually abbreviated "sov") to the Goons. WN is also shedding corps that can't seem to pull weight, that or they're jumping ship; but I dunno. Not like I'm in that neck of the woods to interview the belligerant parties.

Why are they fighting?

Well, there's resources to mine, and since you can't simply jump anywhere you like (have to use jump gates and basically stay on the roads), this creates bottlenecks on the map - easily defensible points at which you can set up a blocking force to prevent incursions into your wealthy areas. There's plenty of two-bit kingdoms set up in dead-end spacelanes - they can sit in their little dead-end area and basically do whatever they like.

Apparently, WN had a nice pocket of stuff and they had the routes to other areas under lock and key, so to keep expanding, the Goons went in after them.

It's kind of neat that the game mechanics allow for PvP Wars. Lots of little skirmishes and stuff, then a big battle or two, until one side or the other gets sick and tired of hemmoraging money in maintaining the war effort. Then stuff will settle down and things go back to what passes for normal.

Or something like that; I'm occupying my time by running NPC jobs, helping the Better Half mine, and giving her junk loot to reprocess into useful materials.

Not very important side note:

There are a lot of european players on the server. Whole slew of them from Russia, too. Sometimes corporations form under thsoe lines, so there's things like Romanian League, Red Star i-forget, and other such patriotic corporations. i find that interesting, until the racial slurs start flying or I start to see cyrillic text.

Sorry for not replying, I do read your threads about EVE.

I liked the one about the one outlaw guy who had the bounty on his head. Sounded pretty cool. I tried the game out with Roman for a little while and I felt the gameplay was a little slow and uninteresting. If I had time to invest in that type of game it may be more appealing.

One of the reasons I play Old Republic and probably will for a while is you can get into the quests and storyline. Also you can do hack and slash type of gameplay as well as crafting. It can be face paced. I really like the Saints guild. The guys in it are cool and very willing to craft you rare pieces if needed. So it gets a little deep, but not too deep. At least for me anyway. Not hard to put the game down. I like that aspect. A lot of milestones when leveling. I'm sure EVE Online has a similiar experience in that aspect too.

Post by pvtnum11 Thu Jan 12, 2012 6:09 pm

Yeah, EVE is definitely slow-paced, but that's mostly because I'm avoiding the brutal cut-throat PvP aspect right now.

Once you get into PvP, the game gets INTENSE, but then if you;'re looking to actually wage a war against another faction, you might be doing this for days or even weeks of battles to wear the other side down, while seeking to minimize your own losses.

You lose a ship, you just lost money, no matter how much insurance you had on your ship. This is why they stress that you should never fly anything you can't afford or are unwilling to lose. i can replace my ship for only pocket change at the moment, so I'm not really caring.

It'll be different when I upgrade to a cruiser hull with spendy hardware.

Not many MMO's stick a penalty in term of item loss or monetary loss if you die. It gives you an element of risk - if TOR did that, I bet PvP battles woudl be vastly different - knowing that after you're dead, the opposing side can loot yoru corpse for your equipped items, the stuff in your inventory, and your loose change.... Might be a good way to score some good equipment though, gang up and kill the higher-level player, gank his stuff, TROLOLOLOL.

No wonder most MMO's don't do that - all you get is XP and/or faction points, mostly. SWG was the same way. Death was not a big deal, aside from having to get re-buffed and possibly losing out on some faction reward for failing to meet the objective.

EVE is totally different. Your faction loses a battle, not only are you out a gob-ton of cash for having to replace your ship, but you may have lost territory as well. If you dropped cash to plonk down a space station, you might be out of that, as well. They capture it, they own it, you're out a ship, territory and a station. It's very dynamic. With the holidays over, I bet that most of the epic battles and campaigns will draw down, as a lot of the player base is in school

Funny moments last night:

Guy posts in local-chat in Russian, all cyrillic lettering and stuff. Some angry jerk gripes about it cluttering up the chatbar. I ask why it's a big deal - I think it looks cool and seriously, there's bigger things to get in a snit over than some random cyrillic letters showing up once in awhile in chat.

i get the Spanish Inquisition over it. Lol, players are so funny when they're rude about how other people are being rude. Wish Roman or Slav was there so I coudl at least get the translation, but oh well. Surprised the chatbar even displayed it at all...

Yeah, I think the Guild is involved with quite a few games. EVE, Lord of the Rings Online, Old Republic, and a few other titles.
