Windows 7 SP1

Post by Ambush on Sat Mar 20, 2010 3:49 pm

Service Pack 1 has been annouced.

Posted in Operating Systems, 19th March 2010 11:03 GMT

Microsoft revealed a few more details about Windows 7 Service Pack 1 yesterday, confirming it would involve a small-fry update to the operating system.

However, the software vendor didn't reveal when a finalised version of Windows 7 SP1 - nor indeed a beta - of the updates package would land.

"For Windows 7, SP1 includes only minor updates, among which are previous updates that are already delivered through Windows Update," wrote Microsoft's Brandon LeBlanc in a blog post yesterday.

"SP1 for Windows 7 will, however, deliver an updated Remote Desktop client that takes advantage of RemoteFX introduced in the server-side with SP1 for Windows Server 2008 R2."

RemoteFX is the virtualised graphics and media-processing feature that Microsoft picked up with its acquisition of Calista Technologies more than two years ago, more about which here.

LeBlanc unsurprisingly said that customers mulling an upgrade to Windows 7 shouldn't sit it out until SP1 for the operating system rocks up. ®

Yeah, have fun trying to do that... dealing with whatever lag at the home computer, and add the lag from wherever you're physically at, and you'll be getting lots of time staring at kill cams.

Well, I suppose it wouldn't matter if you were running an app that wasn't dependent on you being able to mash buttons furiously in a set amount of time - and you wouldn't have to have lots of processor power on the remote end of the link, yes? So you could run a graphics/processor/memory intensive app (oh, like Crysis) on some podunk second-hand netbook from fifty miles away and not worry about it. Right? Just have real good bandwidth. Sounds like all you're really doing is using the remote end as input/output devices, whereas the distant end does all the work.

Hey, Google? Since we're the gateway to Asia, and they have awesome bandwidth, can we get that nifty fiber-optic thingy out here? okthxbai
